Meet Our Instructors

Darren will be entering his 10th season at Holly Ridge. Darren grew up in Walden, NY and was introduced to golf at the age of 5 by his father, an avid golfer. He began working at a local golf course in high school and quickly fell in love with the golf club environment. After deciding that a career in golf was something he wanted to pursue, he enrolled at Campbell University and graduated with a degree in Professional Golf Management. As an intern, Darren worked at The Tuxedo Club (Tuxedo Park, NY), Rockrimmon Country Club (Stanford, CT) and at The Country Club (Brookline, MA).

Following his final internship, Darren joined Prouts Neck Country Club (Scarborough, ME) as the First Assistant. He also worked seasonally in Florida at The Bears (Jupiter, FL) and The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, (Jupiter, FL). Darren also served as First Assistant at Black Hall Club (Old Lyme, CT) and most recently at Chevy Chase Club (Chevy Chase, MD).

Since then, Darren has been privileged to work and teach at some wonderful clubs throughout the country; Chevy Chase Club (Chevy Chase, MD), Prouts Neck Country Club (Scarborough, ME), The Bears Club & Ritz Carlton Golf Club (Jupiter, FL), and Black Hall Club (Old Lyme, CT)

Darren has led the instructional program since coming to Holly Ridge, and enjoys working with golfers who love the game and want to improve.

All Lessons include video analysis.  Students will receive a video lesson recap, drills and practice plan.

Sherry Makerney is an LPGA Class A golf professional with a passion for teaching and coaching players of all skill levels. She has been described as an extremely knowledgeable professional with a very patient and thoughtful approach to teaching. 

Sherry grew up in Texas, played collegiate golf at the University of Northern Colorado, and has worked in the golf industry for twenty-five years. She worked as a professional at Kapalua, Hawaii at The Chuck Cook Golf Academy, Hank Haney Golf Ranch in Austin Texas and Golf Digest Schools in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida before moving to New England in 2006. Sherry spent fourteen years as the Head Golf Coach at Wellesley College and worked as a teaching professional at Wellesley Country Club. She was named Liberty League Coach of the Year in 2019. 

Sherry moved to Sandwich with her family in 2020 and has been an integral part of the golf community. In addition to golf, she enjoys tennis, pickleball, biking, gardening and exploring the cape with her friends and family.
